WHEN Tim returned to the ranch late that afternoon, Rory

was nowhere to be found.

“Did you try the truck barn?” Hugh suggested. “A few

days ago I suggested he take a look at Old Mac’s truck. I

figured that if he could get it to work, he’d have wheels of

his own. It’s real y old and probably not worth the

maintenance, but it’s just gathering dust right now and—”

Tim shut his brother up by shaking his head. “Rory

doesn’t have a driver’s license.”

“He looked kind of happy when I told him about the

truck. I figured it would be a good chal enge for him, and

since everything is snowed under, work is slow anyway.”

Tim sighed. “I’l go take a look.” He walked out into the

failing light of the early evening. He had to pick up his mood

before finding Rory, even after a disappointing day like

today. He’d visited a few ranches in the neighborhood,

trying to secure Rory another job, but nobody wanted the

risk of taking on a convicted horse thief, not even after Tim

explained how wel he was doing. He even did what he’d

feared he’d have to do and offered his own services as a

wrangler in the hope it would make them bite. He’d

received several work offers, but none of them extended to

Rory, and he’d made it clear that they were a package

deal, even if it meant advertising his more than friendly

connection to Rory.

So he came home with no results to show for it and

the dreaded feeling that he was going to have to lay his

cards on the table for Rory, explaining that Hunter and

Grant were asking him to leave the ranch. He had no idea

how he was going to explain it to Rory without hurting him

beyond repair. He hoped he could play it by ear.

As Tim neared the truck barn, he saw the door was

open and the light was on. Despite the dread of having to

bring Rory bad news, the idea of seeing his lover again

made Tim smile. The smile quickly disappeared when Rory

didn’t answer to his name. Tim walked among the trucks

and tractors and peered inside every one of them, but no

Rory.

Then he noticed Old Mac’s truck was gone.

“Damn, Rory,” Tim murmured to himself. “Getting

caught driving without a license might be enough for that

bastard to revoke your parole!”

Tim walked out again and fol owed the tracks in the

snow right up to the homesteads and beyond. He decided

to jump in his own truck, knowing the tracks would get

muddled as soon as he drove off the ranch but unable to

just sit around and wait for Rory to return. He hoped he had

a good enough recol ection of what Mac’s truck looked like

that he would recognize it if he saw it around town. He had

no idea where Rory could have gone. Al he could hope

was that he would find Rory before the cops did.

After unsuccessful y driving around for about an hour,

he turned to the interstate and drove in the direction of the
